The sub-4-metre physical footprint of compact SUVs means there is an inherent limitation as far as boot capacity is concerned, especially in comparison to midsize SUVs. Despite this, several models have a boot capacity that does not significantly hinder their usability quotient. That said, here is our list of the boot space compact SUVs offer, as measured from the boot floor to the parcel tray (with the rear seats in place), arranged from smallest to largest.
9. Mahindra XUV 3XO
Boot capacity – 295 litres
With a paltry 295 litres of space behind the rear seats, the Mahindra XUV 3XO’s boot is the smallest here. Furthermore, sizeable side intrusions eat up even more space, while the low boot floor and high loading lip make hauling items in and out of the 3XO’s boot quite an exercise.
8. Maruti Suzuki Fronx, Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor
Boot capacity – 308 litres
Marginally better than the 3XO, the 308-litre boot of the Maruti Fronx and Toyota Taisor is still quite small. The low and sloped roof would make approaching the boot tricky for taller folks, with the high sill increasing the effort required to load or unload luggage.
7. Maruti Suzuki Brezza
Boot capacity – 328 litres
The Maruti Brezza’s boot has a reasonably wide aperture, which makes accessing it an easy affair. This, along with a square-ish shape and 328 litres of space, means loading it with luggage does not require a great deal of planning.
6. Nissan Magnite, Renault Kiger
Boot capacity – 336 litres
With 336 litres up to the parcel tray, the boot space offered by the Nissan Magnite and Renault Kiger is far from the worst here. The overall shape of this boot enhances its practicality quotient, while the available width and depth are sufficient for accommodating a couple of large travel bags.
5. Tata Nexon
Boot capacity – 350 litres (approx.)
The Tata Nexon’s boot capacity is approximately 350 litres when measured up to the rear parcel tray. Complementing this space are multiple hooks to hang grocery bags, along with a 12-volt socket and boot light. However, intrusion from the wheel wells means larger items will not fit width-wise, thus limiting this boot’s practicality to an extent.
4. Skoda Kylaq
Boot capacity – 360 litres
Despite the prominent side intrusions eating up some space, the Skoda Kylaq’s boot is still a usable 360 litres. The floor is neither too deep nor impractically shallow, so the task of loading the Kylaq’s square-shaped boot does not feel arduous. Boosting everyday usability is a boot light and a couple of handy bag hooks. The inclusion of a dedicated slot to store the parcel tray further improves practicality.
3. Hyundai Venue
Boot capacity – 375 litres
The Hyundai Venue’s 375-litre boot is 80 litres larger in volume than the Mahindra XUV 3XO’s. The Venue’s boot suffers minimal intrusion from the wheel wells, while the deep floor enables users to store taller items more easily. There is also a hook to hang your groceries on and an angled boot light. However, the high loading lip makes hauling heavier items out of the Venue’s boot feel cumbersome.
2. Kia Sonet
Boot capacity – 385 litres
At 385 litres, the Kia Sonet’s boot is slightly bigger than the Venue’s. The wide aperture allows easy access to the boot, while its overall shape and depth can accommodate a long weekend’s worth of luggage without much fuss. Some of the amenities here include a tie-down hook and a boot lamp.
1. Kia Syros
Boot capacity – 390 litres
The Kia Syros has the biggest boot among all the compact SUVs here. It is also the only one in the segment with sliding second-row seats, which, even in their rearmost position, do not eat into the 390-litre boot. Despite the side intrusions, a low-set floor opens up plenty of space, allowing sizeable travel bags to be carried upright. A boot lamp and a couple of bag hooks increase the practicality. That said, the high loading lip could pose a challenge when handling heavier items.
