Most modern cars are designed to appeal to as many different types of people as possible. Regretfully, that excludes people who are deemed tall. Taller people do not have the luxury of using seat cushions and other features to fit in practically any car, unlike shorter drivers.
I understand exactly what it’s like to want more headroom and legroom because I’m a 6’6” guy. In order to help with that, we’ve put together a list of the Top Seven (7) best SUVs for tall drivers.
1. Jeep Grand Wagoneer
Over the years, we’ve tested a lot of automobiles, but very few have the room and technology that the Jeep Grand Wagoneer offers. There is little more than 82 inches of combined legroom and headroom in the front row.
Although it is a few inches less than some of the rivals we will discuss, the Grand Wagoneer excels in terms of overall passenger comfort.
Consider this SUV to be excellent for drivers and the rest of their passengers as well, as the second and third rows both provide class-leading headroom and legroom.
2. GM Suburban / Yukon / Escalade
Since all three of General Motors’ full-size SUVs provide the same amount of headroom and legroom in the front row, they all receive high marks overall. With a combined headroom and legroom of up to 86.8 inches, they actually lead the class.
That holds true irrespective of the brand or possible trim you select.
Though each of the Suburban, Yukon, and Escalade has its own appeal, be aware of a few possible drawbacks. Of the three, only the Escalade boasts an incredibly opulent cabin, and none of the others offer outstanding third-row room.
3. Hyundai Palisade
Look no farther than the Hyundai Palisade if you’re looking for a vehicle with a focus on value. This three-row SUV has a lot of room, flair, and comfort. There is 84.8 inches of total headroom and legroom for those sitting in the front seat.
With up to 19 city and 24 highway mpg, the remarkably smooth V6 powertrain lies beneath the hood.
The Palisade also has an amazing five-year bumper-to-bumper limited warranty in addition to a substantial 10-year powertrain warranty. This list has nothing on that.
4. Toyota Grand Highlander
Among the SUVs in this group, the Grand Highlander is arguably the least well-known. Its recent arrival on the market and the fact that it is difficult to tell apart from its smaller sibling are contributing factors.
However, because it provides more than 83 inches of total headroom and legroom in the front row, it merits consideration here.
Furthermore, it still provides outstanding comfort for passengers in the second and third rows. It has a sleek appearance, lots of safety technology, and is powerful.
In our most recent evaluation, we rated it a 9 out of 10.
5. Ford Bronco
Although placing the two-row-only Bronco on this list may seem odd, it’s a real dark horse. In terms of headroom and legroom, its boxy shape actually makes it one of the greatest cars on this list. 86.4 inches is the result of combining both, which is more than in the Navigator or the Wagoneer.
Of course, there’s also a cunning way for the Bronco to outperform everyone else in this situation. Remove the top completely. Nothing else on the list has that capability.
6. Jeep Grand Cherokee
Like its larger Grand Wagoneer sibling, the Grand Cherokee has generous amounts of spaciousness, comfort, and elegance. It costs a little less and has significantly greater off-road capability than the BMW X7, yet it is still rather large.
Furthermore, the Grand Cherokee is offered in three-row and two-row configurations. Lastly, it’s important to mention how great the Grand Cherokee’s third row is, with a combined 67.6 inches of head and legroom.
7. Kia Carnival
Although this isn’t strictly an SUV, please bear with us. The front row of the Carnival offers 82.8 inches of combined headroom and legroom.
It also has the most capacity in the second and third rows of any vehicle on this list. Furthermore, when all three rows are in position, the cargo area is somewhat larger than 40 cubic feet.
You can see where we’re headed when you compare those measurements to the Escalade’s meager 25.5 cubic feet of storage capacity.
It’s easier to drive the Carnival since it handles more like a car than any of these SUVs.
We advise choosing the Kia if you’re just buying an SUV to look good because it’s easier to see out of. Not only does it resemble an SUV in certain ways, but in our opinion, its greatest feature is its self-assurance in driving the ideal car for the situation.
4 Tips For Choosing The Best Cars For Tall People
Your car needs to meet all of your needs, including having height adjustment capability. Not every tall person is constructed or handles a car in the same manner.
Before deciding on one of the best SUVs for tall drivers, there are other things to consider, like:
Select a Vehicle That Suits You
Legroom is defined as the longest leg that can fit in a seat that has been fully pushed back. Knee flexion makes measuring more difficult. A good approximation can be obtained with a tape measure.
Headroom is the vertical space between a seat’s lowest point and a point directly above on the ceiling when the seat is in its lowest position.
Line-of-sight height is one method to take into account when choosing an automobile for a tall person in order to calculate head and legroom.
Changing the Seats in the Car for Tall Drivers
Like the rest of the car, the seats aren’t designed for tall people. There are a few modifications you can make, though. If extra legroom is desired, seat track extensions are available for purchase.
You can sit farther back and enjoy additional legroom by reassembling your seat.
Utilization of Automobiles
Making proper use of your vehicle is also essential. For example, a tall person who travels primarily alone might require different accommodations than someone who frequently carries other passengers or his family.
Sometimes, when driving, space can be sacrificed for rear accommodation.
Position for Driving
The driver should be able to view the ground from 12 to 15 feet in front of the car and 1.5 car lengths on either side when they are properly seated. Taller people should seek for a seat that is easy to raise and lower in order to achieve the ideal riding position.
