We had recently reported that the Thar 2WD variants would soon start to get the HT tyres instead of AT tyres. HT stands for Highway Terrain and AT is All Terrain. As the name suggests, the HT tyres are better suited for road use but still have plenty of off-road capability in them for occasional use with a 2WD SUV like the Thar. The AT tyres are much more aggressive in their tread pattern and offer superior off-road performance for more aggressive off-road conditions.

However, there are still trade-offs with both kinds of tyres. If you mostly drive on the roads with occasionally driving in gravel or sand and such, then the HT tyres will give you the following benefits:
- Road Noise: The HT tyres have minimal lateral blocks, which contains the tyre noise within the tread of the tyres while cruising on the highways.
- On-Road Grip: Since they have more rubber making contact with the road, they offer better grip and braking distances.
- Fuel Efficiency: These kinds of tyres are also more fuel efficient as they allow air to slip around them more freely compared to an AT tyre.
- Tyre Life: With more rubber making contact with the tarmac, there’s simply more rubber to chew through before it’s time to replace them. Hence, they last longer than AT tyres.
- Cheaper: When it’s time to replace the tyres, you’ll find that the HT tyres are a wee bit cheaper than the AT tyres.

As you can see, the JK Tyre Ranger HT has fewer lateral grooves while the Ranger AT has a much more blocky pattern. Besides JK, Mahindra are also procuring HT tyres from MRF for the Thar 2WD. As you can see in the image towards the top of this article, the tyres on the Thar 2WD are MRF Wanderer HT. For the AT kind, they are sourcing tyres from Ceat, MRF and JK Tyre.
