Although the fourth-generation BMW X3 has always had a turbo-petrol engine, with only 190hp, it wasn’t as powerful as its rivals. BMW has tried to address this with the new 30 xDrive variant, with which it has retuned the same 2-litre turbo-petrol engine to produce 68hp more. With a price tag of Rs 74.50 lakh, the new X3 30 xDrive is squarely aimed at the Mercedes-Benz GLC 300. So, let us compare the specifications and price of both to see which is the better option on paper.
BMW X3 vs Mercedes-Benz GLC: Dimensions
The X3 is larger overall, but the GLC has a longer wheelbase
The BMW SUV is 39mm longer, 30mm wider and 20mm taller than the Mercedes-Benz GLC. However, the latter has a 23mm longer wheelbase, which translates into better overall cabin space and 50 litres more boot capacity.
BMW X3 vs Mercedes-Benz GLC: Powertrain
Both get similar powertrains, but the GLC is slightly faster
Both are powered by similarly sized turbo-petrol engines paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system. Power and torque outputs are identical, and in both SUVs, drive is sent to all four wheels. However, the Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 gets a 9-speed automatic transmission, one more gear than the BMW X3 30 xDrive, which could make it slightly better suited for high-speed cruising.
In this comparison, the GLC 300 claims a marginally quicker 0-100kph run and offers a higher top speed than its BMW rival. However, the X3 gets adaptive dampers for suspension, which the Mercedes lacks.
BMW X3 vs Mercedes-Benz GLC: Price
The BMW offering is the more affordable option
The new BMW X3 30 xDrive costs Rs 1 lakh less than the Mercedes-Benz GLC 300. On paper, the X3 30 xDrive comes off as a stronger offering than the GLC 300 thanks to its larger dimensions and similar engine outputs.
Prices are ex-showroom, India.
