The GST 2.0 rates rollout in September 2025 was a landmark moment in the Indian automotive space, marking an industry-wide downward revision of prices for the first time in several years. This, combined with the festive season fervour, has resulted in an uptick in sales for most manufacturers. However, market leader Maruti Suzuki recorded a decline, while Tata Motors, Mahindra and Hyundai were tied in an intense battle for the second spot. Let’s take a closer look at how each automaker fared.
Maruti Suzuki
Sales: 1,32,820 units, Change: -8.4 percent YoY
Maruti Suzuki dispatched 1,32,820 units locally in September 2025, down 8.4 percent from 1,44,962 units in the year-ago period, although it was a marginal improvement from 1,31,278 units in August. The UV segment saw sales of 48,695 units in September, a 20.9 percent fall from 61,549 units a year ago. Meanwhile, the compact segment, which includes models like the Swift, Baleno and Wagon R, provided relative stability, with sales of 66,882 units, up 10.6 percent year on year (YoY) from 60,480 units. However, the mini segment comprising Alto and S-Presso continued its steep decline, with sales falling 30.4 percent to 7,208 units.
Despite wholesale constraints, Maruti Suzuki reported encouraging retail momentum during the ongoing Navratri festive period. The company achieved its highest-ever deliveries of 1,65,000 units in the first eight days of the festive season, suggesting improved consumer sentiment following GST reforms.
Tata Motors
Sales: 59,667 units, Change: +45 percent YoY
Tata Motors achieved its highest-ever monthly passenger vehicle shipments in September 2025, delivering 60,907 units (including 59,667 domestic units), a 47 percent YoY surge. The Nexon spearheaded the volumes, registering the highest-ever monthly sales for any single Tata model, with over 22,500 units delivered. Meanwhile, the Harrier and Safari duo maintained strong momentum, achieving their best-ever combined sales. September also saw EV sales surge over 96 percent YoY to 9,191 units. CNG vehicle sales, too, reached a record high with 17,800 units dispatched.

Mahindra
Sales: 56,233 units, Change: +10 percent YoY
Mahindra reported its highest-ever monthly domestic SUV sales of 56,233 units in September 2025, a 10 percent year-on-year growth. Overall, the company dispatched 58,714 vehicles, including exports. This was a marked improvement over August dispatches of 39,399 units, although that was because Mahindra had consciously decided to bring down the wholesale billing to minimise the stock being carried by the dealers. Mahindra’s cautious August strategy paid dividends. The company witnessed robust growth in retail sales during the first nine days of Navratri, with SUVs growing over 60 percent.
Hyundai
Sales: 51,547 units, Change: +0.9 percent YoY
With domestic sales of 51,547 units, Hyundai took the fourth spot last month, a marginal increase from 51,101 units in September 2024. However, exports surged notably in the same period – from 13,100 units to 18,800 units. What’s incredible is that the Creta saw record monthly sales of 18,861 units despite its relative age, while the Venue also recorded strong sales of 11,484 units, the highest in the last 20 months. Overall, SUVs were responsible for much of the growth – the 37,313 units comprised 72 percent of Hyundai’s total sales.

Toyota
Sales: 27,089 units, Change: +14 percent YoY
Toyota’s domestic sales rose 14 percent YoY to 27,089 units in September 2025 (23,802 units a year ago). Exports stood at 4,002 units compared to 3,045 units last year. Cumulative sales increased 16 percent to 31,091 units.
Kia
Sales: 22,700 units, Change: -3.5 percent YoY
Kia India has reported mixed performance in September 2025. It sold 22,700 units, up 15.8 percent month-on-month from 19,608 units in August but down 3.5 percent from 23,523 units a year ago. Additionally, Kia India exported 2,606 units in September 2025.
JSW MG Motor India

Windsor continues to be the main volume driver for MG.
JSW MG Motor India reported sales of 6,728 units, a year-on-year growth of 34 percent from 5,021 units. September also saw a marginal growth over August 2025’s 6,578 units. The Windsor contributed majorly to this performance, achieving record dispatches since launch, while the Comet EV registered its best-ever sales in CY2025.
Skoda
Sales: 6,636 units, Change: +101 percent
Skoda is riding a strong growth momentum, thanks to the Kylaq, which was its primary volume driver in September. The brand posted domestic sales of 6,636 units, recording a solid 101 percent growth YoY. The brand said it has sold 53,355 units so far this calendar year. Of this, the Kylaq accounted for over 34,500 units.

Honda

Honda sold 8,096 units in September 2025, a notable drop from 10,911 units in the year-ago period. Domestic sales fell 6.5 percent to 5,303 units from 5,675 units, while exports dropped 46.6 percent to 2,793 units from 5,239 units.
Nissan
Sales: 1,652 units, Change: -22 percent YoY
Nissan reported consolidated sales of 10,500 units, a 9.3 percent increase from 9,629 units in September 2024. Exports comprised the bulk of it (8,872 units), while just 1,652 units were dispatched in India, a 22 percent decline from 2,113 units a year ago. Nissan currently sells only the Magnite in India.
