Here’s what happened in January 2026:
- First, MG started offering an additional Rs. 50,000 in discounts on all variants of the Astor, including the already well-priced base model. This brought the total discounts on Astor to Rs. 85,000 (50k in cash, 20k loyalty and 15k corporate).
- Then, MG increased the prices of all Astor variants by Rs. 14,100, which took the starting ex-showroom price of the Astor to Rs. 9.79 lakh.
- And recently, we have learned that MG have started offering another Rs. 50,000 discount on all variants of the Astor, including the most affordable Sprint variant. This brings the total discounts on Astor in January 2026 to Rs. 1.35 lakh (1 lakh in cash, 20k loyalty and 15k corporate) thus bringing the effective purchase price to Rs. 8.44 lakh.
- Rs. 9.79 lakh (ex-showroom price) minus Rs. 1.35 lakh (max effective discounts in Jan 2026)

*Must-have features are highlighted with italics and underline
You could say that the car is much better loaded than many B2-segment SUVs measuring 4 meters or less. The sub-4m SUVs costing more than Rs. 8.50 lakh (ex-sh) often provide fewer important features than the Astor, which also has to bear a higher tax burden (40% GST) than a B2-segment SUV (18% GST).
MG Astor Sprint Missing Features
The only features I might miss here are:
- Rear parcel tray: Easy to install post purchase
- Cruise control: Forgivable considering the effective price of the car
- Power-folding mirrors: Another feature we can manage without considering the asking price
- Wheel covers: Easy to install post purchase
- Wireless Android Auto and Apple Carplay: Easy to install with aftermarket USB accessory
MG Astor Notable Standard Safety Features
The Astor base variant covers the safety aspects also quite well with features such as:
- 6 airbags
- Rear washer wiper
- Rear defogger
- Rear fog lamps
- HSA
- ESC
- All disc brakes
- LED projector headlamps
V3 Insights & Risks
Firstly, our source claims that these offers are only applicable for the month of January. However, we believe they may spill into February 2026 as well.
Secondly, even after operating in India for 7 years now with having vehicles on sale for well over 6 years in our country, they haven’t figured out how to price a product. The Hector started with a price tag of Rs. 12.48 lakh in 2019 and after lots of swings in price over the years, today it costs Rs. 11.99 lakh. The Hector also wears a fourth face today since it was first introduced in India. That means, it has received 3 facelifts, one roughly every 2 years. If they followed the industry standards, the Hector should have been getting ready for a generation update by now.
The Astor has gone through its share of price ups and downs and considering its effective price today, it costs Rs. 1.21 lakh less than it did when it was first introduced in 2021 while the market was boiling hot. If they are having difficulties selling a good-looking, beautifully-loaded and underpriced car like the Astor, then something has gone terribly wrong.
When you see that a brand is struggling to sell their products and they are forced to cut prices and/or use discounts to move stock, then it’s likely that they are not in a good financial position because such price cuts are not sustainable in the long run. Deep discounts also impact the brand reputation. Hence, the resale value of the car could suffer more than even an overpriced car costing Rs. 8.50 lakh (ex-sh) today. The impact could be worse if the brand has to wrap up their business from India as car owners struggle to maintain their cars while brand service centres gradually disappear.
Would you consider buying the MG Astor Sprint variant with 1.5L petrol-manual powertrain at Rs. 8.44 lakh + insurance & registration costs?
