The Ather 450 range has evolved significantly over the years, with the company now offering multiple variants across different battery capacities and performance levels. Following changes in subsidy structures and market demand, Ather has expanded its lineup to cater to various customer needs. In total, there are now five distinct variants of the Ather 450, and here is a breakdown of the line-up.
Ather 450S (2.9kWh battery)
The Ather 450S (2.9kWh) is priced at Rs 1.31 lakh
The most affordable model in Ather’s line-up is the 450S. Part of the cost-cutting has been done by replacing the 7-inch TFT touchscreen on the 450X with a more basic LCD colour display here. Despite this, it still retains many of the features of the 450X, including Bluetooth connectivity, which allows you to control music playback and phone calls as well as on-board navigation (though here it’s a turn-by-turn system).
The smaller 2.9kWh battery pack has an IDC-claimed range that’s roughly 30 percent lower than that of the 3.7kWh battery pack. In the real world, Ather says you can expect 105km in SmartEco mode, which drops down to 75km in Sport mode.
The motor has also been turned down to reduce the draw on the smaller battery pack, and Warp mode is out of the picture here. So output figures stand at 5.4kW and 22Nm, which means gentler acceleration on the 450S. That said, the top speed still remains the same as the 450X, at 90kph.
On the one hand, the 450S supports the same rate of fast charging from the Ather Grid as the 450X that’s been on sale for the last year or so – 15km of range from a 10min top-up. However, it ships with a less powerful home charger, so charging times will be slower – 5.5 hours from 0 to 80 percent, and an additional 2 hours 15 minutes to get to 100 percent.
The final small changes are a slight reduction in weight, thanks to the smaller battery pack (down from 111.6kg to 108kg), and a slightly slimmer rear tyre than the 450X (90/90-12 as opposed to 100/80-12).
Ather 450S (3.7kWh battery)
The Ather 450S (3.7kWh) is priced at Rs 1.46 lakh
Launched earlier this year, the 450S is now also available with the larger 3.7kWh battery pack that was once exclusive to the 450X. This variant bridges the gap between the entry-level 450S and the premium 450X range.
The bigger battery pack boosts the IDC-certified range to 161km, up from 122km on the 450S 2.9kWh – representing a nearly 30 percent improvement in range. With the bigger battery pack, Ather says you can expect a realistic range of 130km from SmartEco mode and 90km from Sport mode. This version of the 450S also comes with a different home charger, which takes 4.5 hours to charge from 0-80 percent, with an additional 1 hour 15 minutes needed to reach a full charge.
Performance remains unchanged from the 2.9kWh variant, with the motor continuing to produce 5.4kW and 22Nm of torque, with a claimed 0-40kph time of 3.9 seconds and a 90kph top speed. Four ride modes – Smart Eco, Eco, Ride and Sport – are offered, but Warp mode still remains exclusive to the 450X range.
Despite the battery upgrade, the design and dimensions remain identical to the standard 450S, including the styling, and wheel and tyre choice. The 450S (3.7kWh) also continues with the 7-inch LCD dash with turn-by-turn navigation, hill-hold, Fall Safe, and support for AtherStack OTA software updates.
Ather 450X (2.9kWh battery)
The Ather 450X (2.9kWh) is priced at Rs 1.48 lakh
Ever since it entered its third generation, the Ather 450X has been sold with a larger 3.7kWh battery pack that offered a bump up in range over the Gen 2 scooter. When the FAME-II subsidy was in full force, the government helped cover a large chunk of the costs, and so this large battery was feasible. With the cut in subsidy, prices went up, and this prompted Ather to roll out a new variant of the 450X with a smaller battery pack.
While the 2.9kWh battery pack is the same capacity as the one on the 450S, the difference over the 450S is that here, you still get the 7-inch TFT touchscreen, the chunkier rear tyre, Warp mode, switchable traction control, and Ather’s Magic Twist – a system that allowed riders to twist the accelerator 15 degrees backward to slow down the scooter without using the brakes.
In terms of range, Ather says it’s nearly identical to the 450S (2.9kWh). The difference is that this model also gets Warp mode, where you can expect a real-world range of 75km – what the smaller-battery 450S delivers in Sport mode. The maximum claimed range in SmartEco mode remains unchanged at 105km. Charging performance, however, sees a big upgrade. This is the fastest-charging scooter in the 450 line-up, taking just 3 hours to reach 80 percent and an additional 1 hour 30 minutes for a full charge.
Ather 450X (3.7kWh battery)
The Ather 450X (3.7kWh) is priced at Rs 1.58 lakh
Ather also offers the 450X with a 3.7kWh battery pack, which is essentially the scooter that has been on sale here since July 2022. The company says that it wants to keep offering this version for buyers who want and need the extra range, and are willing to pay for it. At the same time, it will also offer the smaller 2.9kWh version so that buyers aren’t forced to pay for extra battery capacity if they don’t need it.
As a result, this variant offers the highest range figures in the entire Ather line-up. The company claims 130km in SmartEco mode, dropping to 85km in Warp mode. Charging times are identical to the 450S (3.7kWh), with the supplied home charger taking 4.5 hours for a 0-80 percent charge and an additional 1 hour 15 minutes to reach 100 percent.
Ather 450 Apex
The Ather 450 Apex is priced at Rs 1.85 lakh
The flagship of Ather’s 450 range is the 450 Apex, representing what Ather says is the pinnacle of what the 450 platform could achieve within safe operational limits.
The 450 Apex features the most powerful motor in the portfolio. It produces 7kW and 26Nm, making it the quickest Ather scooter to date with a claimed 0-40kph time of 2.9 seconds and a top speed of 100kph – 10kph higher than both the 450S and 450X. These performance figures are unlocked in an exclusive Warp+ mode that replaces the standard Warp mode from the 450X.
The Apex is offered only with a 3.7kWh battery pack, with an IDC-certified range of 157km. Real-world figures stand at 130km in SmartEco mode and 80km in Warp+ mode. It also debuted a number of features for Ather, including Magic Twist and traction control – both of which have since filtered down to other models. More recently, it received a multi-level cruise control system that works from as low as 10kph, automatically adjusting torque output and regenerative braking to maintain a set speed, even on gradients.
Visually, the Apex distinguishes itself with a striking Indium Blue colour scheme, transparent rear panels showcasing the bright orange chassis, and introduced Ather’s enclosed belt drive system, which has since been adopted across the range. Priced at Rs 1.85 lakh (ex-showroom), it is currently Ather’s most expensive model, but also the one that consistently pioneers the company’s latest innovations in hardware and technology.
