JSW’s Plans For Indian Market
JSW plan to bring an all new commercial vehicle brand in India sometime in 2026. For this vehicle, they will license technology from a Chinese company. Which company will provide this tech know-how remains a secret at the moment.
Besides commercial vehicles, JSW also intend to launch a new electric passenger car brand sometime in 2027. This too will use Chinese technologies but all cars and commercial vehicles launched under the JSW flag will have a very high level of localization.
MG Brand’s Future In India
We don’t expect MG or SAIC to leave their customers hanging. Just like Ford and Chevrolet continue to support their car owners with spares availability, maintaining the car should not be a problem at least for the next decade.
However, we don’t expect SAIC to allow JSW to continue using the MG brand for several years after SAIC depart India. They still have a healthy stake in their India operations and the transition will take a good while. For the foreseeable future, we expect MG and JSW to continue selling their portfolio cars under the MG brand.
By the time JSW are ready to launch their own brand, we expect them to have completed the takeover of the joint venture. By then, SAIC may have completely withdraw from India and taken the MG brand with them. So, we can expect JSW to gradually phase out the cars from MG India’s current portfolio and replace them with their own alternatives.
We expect SAIC to hold a small but meaningful footprint through the MG Select showrooms, which may continue to exist even after SAIC have pulled out of India.
